How each builder works for a business

Wix

Free, or Light at $17/mo yearly

Wix's free plan doesn't ask for a credit card. You get 500 MB storage and 1 GB bandwidth at siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress, with a Wix banner ad at the top. Light is $17 a month billed yearly and adds a custom domain. Payments, basic eCommerce and scheduling start on Core at $29 a month.

Better at
Growing into online booking and selling on one platform.
Watch out
The banner ad on free, and payments need Core at $29 a month.

Google Sites

Free with a Google account

Google Sites is free if you have a Google account. You can connect up to 5 domains you already own per site at no cost, as long as your site is public. It also works with Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, calendars and maps.

Better at
A business site on your own domain for $0.
Watch out
Editing needs a computer, and buying a new domain needs Google Workspace.

Square Online

Free on Square Free

Square includes online store features on every plan, starting with Square Free at $0 a month. You get a website builder, SEO tools, pickup, local delivery and shipping, and you pay card processing fees on each sale. Paid plans are Square Plus at $49 a month and Square Premium at $149 a month, per location.

Better at
Shops and restaurants that already use Square in person.
Watch out
Card processing fees on every online sale.

WordPress.com

Free, or Personal at $4/mo yearly

WordPress.com has a free plan that never expires. It gives you 1 GB of storage and unlimited pages and posts at yoursite.wordpress.com, and it puts ads on your site. Personal costs $4 a month billed yearly, removes the ads and includes a free domain for the first year.

Better at
A business blog with unlimited posts.
Watch out
Ads on free sites, and plugins only on paid plans.

Carrd

Free, or Pro Standard at $19 a year

Carrd gives you 3 one-page sites on its free plan at name.carrd.co, with Made with Carrd branding. If you move to Pro Standard for $19 a year, you get up to 10 sites, custom domains, contact and payment forms, and embeds from Stripe, PayPal and Gumroad.

Better at
A one-page business site with a form and your domain for $19 a year.
Watch out
Each site is a single page.

Squarespace

From $19/mo yearly, 14-day trial

Squarespace doesn't have a free plan, just a 14-day trial. Basic is $19 a month billed yearly or $25 month to month, with a 2% fee on online products, services and donations. Core at $29 a month billed yearly drops that fee to 0%. Card rates start at 2.9% + $0.30.

Better at
Selling services or products with a polished design.
Watch out
No free plan, and the 2% fee on Basic.

Heya

Free, or Pro Lite at $3/mo

Heya is ours. You get 3 free sites at name.heya.bio with 5 pages each, a small Made with Heya badge and no credit card needed. Pick from 68 templates (36 for local businesses like plumbers, restaurants and dentists), embed Google Maps or Calendly, and start building without an account. Pro Lite is $3 a month.

Better at
A finished-looking business site for free, with a template made for your trade.
Watch out
No checkout or forms yet, so buttons link to your booking or payment page.

What a small business website needs

Start with your business name, what you do and the area you serve right in the first screen. Put a phone number or a booking button near the top too. Below that, include your opening hours, prices or a list of services, along with a few real photos of your work. It also helps to add reviews or a short line of proof, plus an address and a map if customers come to you.

Heya's business templates already have these sections built in, so you don't have to set them up yourself. For the map and bookings, you can use Heya's Google Maps and Calendly embeds.

Start from a template for your trade: plumber, restaurant, hair salon or accountant.

When free isn't enough

If you want to sell online, Square Online works on Square's free plan and just charges card processing fees. Wix starts payments on Core at $29 a month billed yearly. Squarespace includes payments on every plan, though Basic takes a 2% cut.

When you're ready for your own domain, Google Sites connects one for free. Otherwise you'll pay: Carrd starts at $19 a year, WordPress.com is $4 a month billed yearly, Heya Pro Standard is $6 a month and Wix is $17 a month billed yearly. Then there are the ads. Both Wix and WordPress.com put ads on free sites. Heya's free plan only shows a small badge, and you can remove it with Pro Lite for $3 a month.

How we checked

We checked each builder on October 26, 2026 from a US connection, so prices are in US dollars. Wix shows its prices only after the page runs in a browser, so we kept the Wix price we confirmed on October 23, 2026. The facts come from wix.com/plans, Google Sites Help, Square's online store plans, wordpress.com/pricing, carrd.co/pro, squarespace.com/pricing.

Plans change often. If a number here is out of date, email hello@heya.page and we'll fix it.

FAQ

What is the best free website builder for a small business?

For a site that brings in calls and bookings, a free plan with a template for your trade is enough. Heya has 36 business templates and publishes for free, while Google Sites lets you connect your own domain at no cost. If you need to sell online, Square Online and Wix (with payments starting on Core at $29 a month) both have checkout built in.

Can a small business website be completely free?

Yes, as long as an address like name.heya.bio or sites.google.com works for you. If you already own a domain, Google Sites will connect it for free, so you only pay your registrar. Most other website builders make you pay for a plan to use a custom domain.

Can customers pay or book on a Heya site?

For payments, forms, or bookings, Heya sites use an outside tool. You can add a button that links out to your existing payment or booking page. Or you can embed Calendly on your site so people can book right on the page.

Do I need a custom domain for my business?

Not to get started. A free address works fine on a QR code, your Google Business Profile and social bios. That said, a domain like yourbusiness.com is easier for people to remember and say out loud. On Heya, Pro Standard at $6 a month connects 1 domain you own.
