Step-by-step guide

How to make a free website in 2026

You can make a free website in 5 steps with no code and no credit card. On Heya, which we make, you edit one of 68 templates without an account, then sign in with Google to publish it free at name.heya.bio, with up to 3 sites and 5 pages each.

Heya is ours, so read its row with that in mind. Every other number comes from each company's own pages, checked on October 26, 2026.

The 4 free options

Google Sites

Free with a Google account

Google Sites runs on your Google account and puts your site at a sites.google.com address. You can nest subpages up to 5 levels deep. If your site is public, you can also hook up to 5 domains you already own per site for free.

Better at
Team, class and club sites that pull in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
Watch out
You can't build or edit on a phone.

WordPress.com

Free, or Personal at $4/mo yearly

WordPress.com has a free plan that doesn't expire. You get 1 GB of storage, unlimited pages and posts, and 7-day stats on a yoursite.wordpress.com address. Free sites have ads on them, though switching to the Personal plan at $4 a month billed yearly takes those off.

Better at
Blogs, with unlimited posts on free.
Watch out
Ads on free sites and no custom domain on free.

Wix

Free, or Light at $17/mo yearly

You can start on Wix for free without a credit card and build right in your phone's browser or the Wix app. The free plan includes 500 MB storage, 1 GB bandwidth, and a Wix banner ad at the top. Moving to Light at $17 a month billed yearly gets you a custom domain.

Better at
Businesses that will add payments or bookings later.
Watch out
The banner ad on every free page.

Heya

Free, or Pro Lite at $3/mo

You can start building in any of the 68 templates without an account, then sign in with Google when you're ready to publish. Free gives you 3 sites at name.heya.bio with 5 pages each, a small Made with Heya badge, and no credit card required. Pro Lite is $3 a month for 20 pages, followed links, and no badge.

Better at
Building without an account, and downloading plain HTML, CSS, fonts and images free on every plan.
Watch out
Forms link out to a tool you already use. A custom domain needs Pro Standard at $6 a month.

Steps 1 and 2: pick a builder, then a template

Start by picking a builder that matches what you're actually making. If you just need a simple class or team site and already have a Google account, Google Sites works well. WordPress.com is a good fit when you're starting a blog and want unlimited posts, while Wix makes sense for a business that might want to take payments down the road. And if you're putting together a small site of up to 5 pages that you want live today, that's what Heya is built for.

Once you've picked your tool, grab the template that looks closest to what you need instead of starting from scratch. On Heya we have 68 of them, including layouts for a wedding site, a restaurant, a plumber, a portfolio, a link page. You don't even have to make an account to try them out - just open any template and start poking around.

Step 3: add your words, photos and links

Swap out the sample text for your own words first. Tell people who you are, what you offer, and how they can get in touch with you. Whatever the main thing is that you want visitors to do, put it right near the top of the page so nobody has to hunt for your phone number, booking link, or RSVP link.

On Heya, you just tap a block to edit it. You can pull photos straight from your camera roll (Heya resizes them to 2048 px) and drop in buttons, a countdown, or icons for 32 social networks. If you have media or tools elsewhere, you can add embeds from YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify, SoundCloud, Google Maps, and Calendly. For forms on Heya, set a button to link out to a form tool you already use.

Steps 4 and 5: publish and share

When you hit publish on a free plan, your site goes live on the builder's own address. On Heya that looks like name.heya.bio, while Google Sites uses sites.google.com, WordPress.com gives you yoursite.wordpress.com, and Wix uses siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress. If you're using Heya, this is the first time we ask you to sign in with Google, and your site goes live right away with HTTPS included.

After it's up, you just need to put the link where people will actually see it. Drop it into your Instagram or TikTok bio and add it to your email signature. You can also turn the address into a QR code or put it on your Google Business Profile.

What stays free and what costs money

All 4 of the options on this page give you the builder, hosting, HTTPS, and a subdomain address for free. What usually ends up costing money is using your own domain name, which you have to buy from a registrar every year and then connect through a paid plan. WordPress.com Personal starts at $4 a month billed yearly for that, and Wix Light is $17 a month billed yearly. Google Sites is the exception and lets you connect up to 5 domains you already own for free, while on Heya a custom domain comes with Heya's Pro Standard plan at $6 a month. You'll also pay if you want to take off ads or a builder badge - on Heya, Pro Lite takes the badge off for $3 a month. And if you need business extras like taking payments, those start on Wix Core at $29 a month.

How we checked

We checked each builder on October 26, 2026 from a US connection, so prices are in US dollars. Wix shows its prices only after the page runs in a browser, so we kept the Wix price we confirmed on October 23, 2026. The facts come from Google Sites Help, wordpress.com/pricing, wix.com/plans, heya.page/pricing.

Plans change often. If a number here is out of date, email hello@heya.page and we'll fix it.

FAQ

Can I really make a website for free?

Yes, you can. Google Sites, WordPress.com, Wix, and Heya all let you build and publish a site for $0 without asking for a credit card. The catch is just the web address and the branding, since free sites stay on the builder's subdomain and most of them show ads or a small badge.

Do I need to know how to code?

No, you don't need to know any code. All 4 of the builders we cover here use visual editors where you start from a template or a blank page. If you do want the code later, Heya lets you download your finished site as plain HTML, CSS, fonts, and images on Pro Plus at $15 a month so you can host it yourself.

Can I use my own domain on a free website?

With Google Sites, yes - you can connect up to 5 domains you already own per site for free, as long as your site is public. WordPress.com, Wix, and Heya all require a paid plan to use a custom domain. On Heya, a custom domain comes with the Pro Standard plan at $6 a month.

Will my free website show up on Google?

Yes, search engines can find and index public sites on free plans. On Heya, your site can show up on Google unless you go into Site settings, then More options, and turn on Hide from Google. Writing a clear page title and putting your service or town in the first heading will help people find you.
