2026 custom domain comparison

Free website builders that let you use your own domain in 2026

Only a few hosts connect your own domain for $0: Google Sites (up to 5 per site), GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages (up to 100 per project) and Netlify. You still buy the domain from a registrar. Heya, which we make, connects 1 custom domain on Pro Standard at $6 a month, and its Pro Plus ($15 a month) ZIP of plain HTML and CSS uploads straight to those hosts.

Heya is ours, so read its row with that in mind. Every other number comes from each company's own pages, checked on October 26, 2026.

How each option works

Google Sites

Free with a Google account

Google Sites lets you connect up to 5 domains you own per site on any Google account, and you don't need a Workspace plan. Your site has to be public. You'll verify the domain in Search Console using TXT and CNAME records, which can take up to 48 hours.

Better at
A visual editor and a custom domain, both for $0.
Watch out
Editing needs a computer, and buying a new domain needs Google Workspace.

GitHub Pages

Free for public repositories

GitHub Pages hosts static HTML, CSS and JavaScript from a public repository on GitHub Free. You can connect a custom domain on an apex, www or subdomain with Let's Encrypt HTTPS. Sites go up to 1 GB, with 10 builds an hour and a soft limit of 100 GB monthly bandwidth.

Better at
Free custom domains for sites you can upload as files.
Watch out
GitHub's terms don't allow business or e-commerce sites.

Cloudflare Pages

Free

On its free plan, Cloudflare Pages connects up to 100 custom domains per project across up to 100 projects. You get 500 builds a month, up to 20,000 files, and files up to 25 MiB. You can deploy with Git or just upload your files directly.

Better at
The most custom domains on a free plan, with direct upload and no Git needed.
Watch out
No visual editor.

Netlify

Free, or Personal at $9/mo

Netlify's free plan connects custom domains with SSL and gives you 300 credits. Each deploy takes 15 credits, and each GB of bandwidth uses 20. If you move to a paid plan, Personal costs $9 a month and Pro is $20 a month.

Better at
Quick deploys with SSL on your own domain.
Watch out
Credits run out as traffic and deploys add up.

Neocities

Free, or Supporter at $5/mo

Neocities gives you 1 GB of storage and 200 GB of bandwidth for free, though it doesn't include a custom domain. Their Supporter plan is $5 a month and adds custom domains with SSL, 50 GB storage, 3,000 GB bandwidth and up to 30 sites.

Better at
Hand-coded HTML sites.
Watch out
Custom domains need Supporter at $5 a month.

Carrd

Pro Standard at $19 a year

Carrd doesn't have custom domains on its free plan. If you upgrade to Pro Standard for $19 a year, you can connect custom domains with Let's Encrypt SSL, and you also get forms and embeds across up to 10 sites.

Better at
Custom domains with SSL, forms and embeds on one $19 a year plan.
Watch out
Each site is a single page.

WordPress.com

Personal at $4/mo yearly

WordPress.com doesn't include a custom domain on the free plan. Their Personal plan is $4 a month billed yearly, coming out to $48 a year. If you get an annual plan, they include a free domain for the first year.

Better at
A free first-year domain with the plan.
Watch out
Monthly plans don't include the free domain.

Heya

Free, or Pro Standard at $6/mo

Ours connects 1 domain you own on Pro Standard at $6 a month, or up to 10 on Pro Plus at $15 a month, with HTTPS set up for you. Free sites publish at name.heya.bio with HTTPS. Pro Plus also lets you download your site as a ZIP of plain HTML, CSS, fonts and images to host anywhere.

Better at
1 custom domain on Pro Standard ($6/mo), or a free ZIP of your site for any host.
Watch out
Custom domains aren't on the free plan, and Heya doesn't sell domains.

The free route: build on Heya, host on Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages

With Heya, you can download your site as plain HTML, CSS, fonts and images on Pro Plus at $15 a month. Once you have those files, Cloudflare Pages lets you upload them directly without using Git, and its free plan connects up to 100 custom domains per project. You can also put those same files in a public repository on GitHub Pages, which hosts them and connects a custom domain for free with HTTPS from Let's Encrypt.

There's a trade-off to doing it this way. Every time you make a change to your site in Heya, you'll have to download the files and upload them to your host again.

What a custom domain costs on a paid builder

If you're looking at paid builders, the cheapest plans that let you use your own domain start with Carrd Pro Standard at $19 a year, WordPress.com Personal at $4 a month billed yearly, Neocities Supporter at $5 a month, and Heya Pro Standard at $6 a month. Going up from there, you have Framer Basic at $10 a month, Webflow Basic at $15 a month, Wix Light at $17 a month and Squarespace Basic at $19 a month, all billed yearly.

A few of these bundle the domain registration in at the start. WordPress.com, Wix and Squarespace include a free domain for the first year when you pick an annual plan, and after that first year you pay for the renewal.

How we checked

We checked each host and builder on October 26, 2026 from a US connection, using their pricing pages and help docs for domain rules. Wix shows its prices only after the page runs in a browser, so we kept the Wix price we confirmed on October 23, 2026. The facts come from Google Sites Help, GitHub Pages docs, Cloudflare Pages limits, netlify.com/pricing, neocities.org/supporter, carrd.co/pro, wordpress.com/pricing, wix.com/plans.

FAQ

Can I get a free website with a custom domain?

Yes. Google Sites lets you connect up to 5 domains you own per site for free, as long as your site is public. GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages and Netlify also connect custom domains on their free plans, though you'll upload your own files instead of using a visual editor. Whatever route you pick, you still pay a registrar for the domain itself.

What's the cheapest website builder with a custom domain?

Among the visual builders that charge, Carrd Pro Standard is the cheapest at $19 a year, with custom domains and SSL across up to 10 one-page sites. WordPress.com Personal is next at $4 a month billed yearly ($48 a year), which also gives you a free domain for the first year. Heya Pro Standard is $6 a month and includes 1 custom domain with HTTPS.

Does Heya support custom domains?

Yes: Pro Standard ($6 a month) includes 1 custom domain per account, and Pro Plus ($15 a month) includes up to 10, with HTTPS set up for you. Pro Plus also lets you download any Heya site as a ZIP of plain HTML, CSS, fonts and images to host on Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages.

Do I need to buy the domain separately?

Yes, if you're using a free host. Google Sites, GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages and Netlify all connect a domain that you already own. Paid builders like WordPress.com, Wix and Squarespace include a free domain for the first year on their annual plans, and then you pay the renewal after that.
