Step-by-step guide

How to connect a Squarespace domain to Heya in 2026

Delete the Squarespace Defaults, then add 3 DNS records: a CNAME on www, an A record and an AAAA record. Your domain stays registered at Squarespace, Heya Pro Standard connects it for $6 a month with free HTTPS, and Squarespace's old records stay cached for up to 4 hours.

Squarespace steps checked against Squarespace's own help center on November 2, 2026.

The 3 records to add in Squarespace

Heya shows these as soon as you connect your domain. Copy the CNAME value from Heya, since every site gets its own address.

Type Name Value
CNAME www Your own address from Heya, ending in .heyadns.com
A @ 149.248.206.36
AAAA @ 2a09:8280:1::1ce:932e:0

If Squarespace calls the AAAA address invalid, enter the same address in full: 2a09:8280:0001:0000:0000:01ce:932e:0000. For a subdomain like shop.example.com, you only add one CNAME, named shop.

What to delete and what to keep

Squarespace adds a preset called Squarespace Defaults to every domain it registers, and your domain can't point to another site while it's there. One click on its red trash can removes all 5 of its records.

Delete: Squarespace Defaults

  • 4 A records on @ pointing to 198.185.159.144, 198.185.159.145, 198.49.23.144 and 198.49.23.145.
  • 1 CNAME on www pointing to ext-sq.squarespace.com.

Keep: your email records

  • MX records, which deliver your email, for example to Google Workspace.
  • TXT records, such as Google site verification and SPF.
  • Anything else you added for other services.

How to connect your Squarespace domain, step by step

  1. Connect the domain in Heya Publish your site first, then open Site settings in the Heya editor, go to Use your own domain and choose Connect a domain. Type your domain, like example.com, and press Connect. Keep this screen open, because it shows the 3 records you'll copy into Squarespace.
  2. Open your DNS settings in Squarespace In a new tab, open your domains dashboard at account.squarespace.com/domains and click your domain. Click DNS, then DNS Settings.
  3. Delete the Squarespace Defaults Click the red trash can next to Squarespace Defaults, then click Delete in the pop-up. Leave your email records (MX and TXT) where they are.
  4. Add the www CNAME Scroll down to Custom Records and click Add record. Squarespace may ask for your password or a two-factor code first. Pick CNAME as the Type, enter www as the Name, paste your address ending in .heyadns.com from Heya into Data, and click Save. Squarespace doesn't allow @ as the name of a CNAME.
  5. Add the A and AAAA records Click Add record again, pick A, enter @ as the Name, put 149.248.206.36 in IP Address and click Save. Then add one more: pick AAAA, enter @, put 2a09:8280:1::1ce:932e:0 in IP Address and click Save. If Squarespace calls that address invalid, enter it in full: 2a09:8280:0001:0000:0000:01ce:932e:0000.
  6. Let Heya check Back in Heya, press Check now, or close the tab and let Heya keep checking on its own. The status goes from Waiting for DNS to Securing while Heya gets your free HTTPS certificate, then to Live. Open your domain in a private or incognito window to see it.

How long it takes

The clicking takes a few minutes. Squarespace's records carry a 4-hour cache time (TTL), so the old Squarespace page can keep showing on some networks, and in Heya's check, for up to about 4 hours after you delete it. Squarespace's own help says domain changes can take 24 to 48 hours.

To test without an old cached copy, open your domain in a private or incognito window. Heya gets the HTTPS certificate by itself once it sees the new records, so there's nothing to set up for the padlock.

If Heya still says Waiting for DNS

Heya tells you what it sees. These are the messages you can run into after a Squarespace change, and the fix for each.

No CNAME on www

Waiting for DNS

We can't see a CNAME record on www.example.com yet.

Means
The www record is missing, or it was saved under a different name.
Fix
In Custom Records, look for a CNAME named www with your .heyadns.com address in Data, then press Check now.

www still points at Squarespace

Waiting for DNS

www.example.com points at ext-sq.squarespace.com.

Means
The Squarespace Defaults are still there, or their old www record is still cached.
Fix
Delete the Squarespace Defaults in DNS Settings. If they're already gone, give the cache up to 4 hours.

Old addresses on the bare domain

Bare domain

example.com answers with 198.49.23.144. It needs exactly A 149.248.206.36 and AAAA 2a09:8280:1::1ce:932e:0.

Means
Old Squarespace A records are still there, or the AAAA record is missing.
Fix
Delete the Squarespace Defaults, then check Custom Records for both records on @: the A and the AAAA.

Squarespace won't save a record

In Squarespace

Squarespace shows an error when a new record clashes with one that's already there, or with a forwarding rule.

Means
Usually the www CNAME from Squarespace Defaults is still in place.
Fix
Delete the Squarespace Defaults first, then add the record again.

How we checked

Every Squarespace step comes from Squarespace's help center: DNS records for web hosting, Pointing a Squarespace domain, Edit your domain's DNS records and Why domain updates take up to 48 hours. We read the Squarespace Defaults and their 4-hour TTL off a domain registered at Squarespace on November 1, 2026. The Heya records come from Heya's own domain setup.

Dashboards change. If a step here no longer matches what you see, email hello@heya.page and we'll fix it.

FAQ

Should I type example.com or www.example.com in Heya?

Either works, and the other one redirects to it. Type example.com and your site lives on https://example.com, with www.example.com redirecting there. Type www.example.com and it's the other way around.

How do I connect a subdomain like shop.example.com?

Type shop.example.com when you connect the domain in Heya, and Heya shows you just one CNAME record, named shop. Add that single CNAME under Custom Records in Squarespace. You don't need to delete the Squarespace Defaults for a subdomain, because they only cover @ and www.

What if I bought my domain at Google Domains?

Domains from Google Domains moved to Squarespace, so you'll find yours at account.squarespace.com/domains and follow the same steps. If you don't see Squarespace Defaults there, delete any other A, AAAA or CNAME records on @ and www instead, since Heya's records need to be the only ones on those names.

Will this break my Google Workspace or other email?

No, as long as you leave your email records alone. Your MX records and TXT records (such as Google Workspace verification or SPF) are separate from Squarespace Defaults, so deleting the preset doesn't touch them. Deleting those records yourself is what breaks email.

Do I need to turn off DNSSEC in Squarespace?

No, DNSSEC can stay on. Squarespace only asks you to turn it off for ALIAS records, and Heya uses A, AAAA and CNAME records.

Does this transfer my domain away from Squarespace?

No. The domain stays registered at Squarespace and renews there. You're only changing its DNS records so it points at your Heya site.

Can I get the Squarespace records back later?

Yes. Delete the 3 Heya records, then open DNS Settings for your domain, click Add preset and choose Squarespace defaults.

How much does a custom domain cost on Heya?

Heya Pro Standard is $6 a month and includes 1 custom domain per account. Pro Plus is $15 a month for up to 10. The HTTPS certificate is free and automatic on both.

Put your Squarespace domain on Heya

Build your site free with no account, publish it, then connect your domain on Pro Standard for $6 a month.
